Growing Pains

In my early 20’s one of the most exciting parts of business for me was the race to watch it grow. I admit many of them didn’t have more than 1-2 employees. However, on the verge of 30, I find myself having a very different concern.

I fear that as my business grows, I will lose touch with my clients/students/customers/staff. Too often we become intoxicated with the potential for growth, reaching the masses, and the financial remuneration that comes with it. So much so, we fail to realize we won’t always have our ears to the ground as effectively as we do now.

At this point DC Consulting has 40+ clients under its belt for 2020. I know each and every one of them, their jobs, their personal issues, the joys & trials that they are going through. I love small companies so much because of the close contact I have with every stakeholder in/around the business. It’s so easy to fall in love and remain in love with all of those who engage with the company while at this level.

In a single day, I can touch base with almost all of my students, team members, partners and service providers. We laugh on the phone, catch up on life and wish each other well as we build our respective ships.

I encourage all small business owners to take this moment in their company and savor it. Don’t rush the growth but let it happen naturally. Extract all the passion and authenticity gifted to you by having these close interactions daily.

What you will find is that the sincerity and passion that you have in carrying out even the most basic daily operations is contagious. Team members carry out their tasks and handle clients with care, service providers prioritize our content according to the deep understanding they carry of the business, and clients have a full, positive experience of the services they come to us for.

This shift in perspective from the “hunt for sales & growth” to that of true care and nurture for the business in its current form results in a more “natural evolution”. Service offerings expand, customer feedback is true and timeous, and the next level of the business is self-activating.
